Do you ever wonder why you do the things you do? And why you keep doing them over and over again . . . no matter how much you want to change? You are not alone. Our habits are often passed down from one generation to the next. We have little control of what they are, or how they affect us, because we often don’t even know they exist. This is the story of a woman who continually sought after the dream of her knight in shining armor. But something always went wrong. Instead of a hero, she found herself choosing destructive and abusive relationships. Dismissing those who may have been a better choice. Always wanting to change. Always hoping to change. But with no one to help her get off the merry-go-round. Until one day, her world is turned upside down. In an unlikely place, in unlikely circumstances, she meets her shining knight. And even though she is unaware of needing it, she soon realizes . . . her rescue is on!

In her sequel to The Making of an Orphan, Dean bravely invites readers in    . . . into her painful choices and missed opportunities. Into betrayals and heartache. Not just once but over and over. The ups and downs of her adult life exemplify the pervasiveness of unaddressed intergenerational trauma. Dean writes with a rare vulnerability that engages readers' intrigue, weaving in therapeutic insights that lance open the inner workings that drove her.

Maybe you can find yourself in the pages of The Rescue of an Orphan like I did and identify with one—or the myriad—of the scenarios that unfold. But hold on tight, because she's not just going to show you her side of the story; she's going to show you the fingerprints of her Rescuer . . . and take you through the journey of discovering if a life lived in the wake of abandonment, rejection, and oppression could really be made new again.

In this sequel to The Making of an Orphan, Leslie Dean has once again shown vulnerability in sharing very personal stories as she relates the continuing impact of intergenerational trauma. While most of us wouldn’t want our chapters read, her desire to share her healing overrides those feelings of being an “open book.” Reading these stories reveals how far-reaching trauma can go. And how we see ourselves through the lenses of our parents. She reveals how it can affect all of our life choices.

In The Rescue of an Orphan, you’ll learn how our skewed adult choices can seem normal, until we learn they’re not. You’ll see how hard it is to re-frame who we think we are, and change how we respond to life’s struggles. Yet, that is not the end of the story—for out of each of those skewed choices, and the resulting pain, we see a glimpse of hope. And it is that hope that allows us to continue to heal, to believe change is possible, and to realize our story doesn’t end with this “chapter.” Woven throughout this book, one is drawn into understanding where true freedom comes from and discovering that it is only through our faith in God, who is the ultimate Rescuer.

How do I know this? Because I was given the privilege to walk beside her as she processed the trauma, to witness the incredible pain as she sought healing, and to see the beauty of a woman who walks with her head held high because she knows God is using her story as an instrument in reaching others with hope . . . . for their rescue!

Leslie Dean is a gifted writer! Once you start reading one of her books, you don’t want to put it down! I am grateful for her courage to share her story. I highly recommend her previous books, Forgiven Much as well as The Making of an Orphan, and now her latest masterpiece. . .

The Rescue of an Orphan!

God truly has rescued her, and her books will inspire you to trust God at a deeper level. This book, along with her others, captures well God’s heart for redemption! Like Leslie, each one of us has a story, and often “our story” contains much pain. But God wants us to find Him in the midst of that pain and allow Him to turn what the enemy meant for evil into good. He is the redeemer of all things, and He will one day redeem ALL things unto himself.

You can’t read Dean’s The Making of an Orphan without immediately reading The Rescue of an Orphan. Her first book was the story of the author’s younger years and foreshadows how the things that she experienced would affect her for decades. The Rescue of an Orphan continues her story into adulthood and to the day when she is rescued by God. It is a beautiful testimony of how our God can work despite the worst circumstances or experiences. I feel so privileged to know the author personally and to witness how deeply she cares for hurting people. By sharing her story with such vulnerability and passion, the author points anyone who is hurting to the One who is waiting to rescue them.
